My Trans Am is somehow getting 16mpg. Go figure! That is a 77% increase over the last engine, Trans, and carb combo and only 2mpg worse than my winter beater V6 2WD Blazer. The new engine has much more displacement and a more aggressive cam. This proves you totally can daily drive an old V8 car, you have no excuses now.

That's all I needed to hear today. :)

I rebuilt the engine and transmission in my '71 Lemans. I put the original 2 barrel carb back on it and got 14 on the highway. I rebuilt a Quadrajet from a '77 Trans Am, and installed a 4 barrel manifold. Not I get 16 at 75 MPH! Go figure. . .These Pontiac engines are torque monsters that can cruise very well at highway speeds. What rear gears do you have?

My Wrangler gets 17.5 MPG... WHAT!
Also, what Prius gets 16MPG??

I'm planning on being in the 20's with my LS. Doesn't seem too crazy, right?
(P.S. after all this I still averaged 31.4MPG last tank)

When pushed hard, yes I think so.

It's all gearing and tuning. I'm hoping with my Ranchero and its EFI/261ci to hit 20+.

Prius. Pushed hard???? What alternate reality have I fallen into?

3.08 but I want 3.73s. I installed an OD Trans but haven't wired up the converter lockout yet.

Top Gear managed to get a second gen Prius down to about 17 MPG running it down their track with a BMW following behind.
I suppose if you can find a way to run it out of fuel with as little brake pedal (regen) action as possible, you could get it even lower!

17.5mpg city or combined? I can barely break 16mpg in mine.

17 =/= 16
Just saying...

Very cool. I'm currently running 2.78 with a TH350, but I have a spare TH200R4 from my son's Grand National that I'm going to install this fall. That way I can switch to 3.55s.

combined. and thats a 4dr with 3.5" of lift and 35" tires full hard top and doors. When I first bought it (stock) and pulled the top and doors I was able to average 22 mpg...

you should get some "hybrid" badges...group buy? I hope they make them big enough to be seen on my land cruiser.

Nice! I went with a 700r4 which required much more work than a 200r4 swap would take. Totally worth it.

Oh okay. Mine is completely stock, 2 door Pentastar/6-speed, and I'm getting ~16mpg city. Maybe it's just because Chicago traffic is bad? Or could the "Pentastar tick" be affecting fuel efficiency? I wanted to regear the rear but I'm having second thoughts now.

I meant it is crazy economical... 'Twas a joke

16 city is about right for that motor on stock esp in Chicago. Whats your gears ratio now?

I know. Im just busting chops for the sake of busting chops.

I got 3.21 gears which is great for city driving and really good for mud but if I wanted to do some harder offroad stuff or run larger tires I would have to do a regear right?

I actually went with the 3.73s from the factory, they help move the weight better IMO, especially with the 6 mt. I wanted 4.10 but they didn't have any. I thought about going to 4.88s but it would kill my highway MPG.

I was going to suggest one of these stickers, because the Trans Am is cool:

While I'd love to agree with you, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that statement... Unless you've got a very sweet commute situation, that is. After DD my bird pretty much since April some time this year; I've unfortunately come to the conclusion that, although awesome as hell, spending a 150$ on gas a week(!) just to get in and out of work everyday just isn't very reasonable on any level.

Yeah, I'm lucky my work is less than 10 miles from my house and I don't have anywhere else. How's your bird coming?

S'all good. Haven't done many upgrades to her yet, except for some new tires and wheels and some more dials in the instrument cluster. The 389 I bought earlier this year is pretty much finished and ready to go in as soon as the tired old 350 throws in the towel.
Still trying to find a diffed rear axle for it as they are damn near impossible to find over here. But when I do find one I've got some new leafs and hi-jackers waiting to go along with it. Also keeping with the 70's theme I'm planning on getting a fiberglass hood with the famous L88 scoop on it.
